If you want to practice with your centerfire rifles at short indoor ranges without blowing holes in the backstops or deafening the next lane, this is it. It pushes cast lead bullets accurately out to 25 yards with a highly suppressed sound signature, even without a can on the muzzle.

Tracking down proper ammunition for a vintage British service revolver is a nightmare, but handloading custom shortened brass with Trail Boss makes it a joy to shoot again. It duplicates the low-velocity arc perfectly without placing any modern stress on the cylinder lugs.
Patrick Campbell –
I wanted to get my 10-year-old comfortable shooting a standard .243 Win rifle, but the full-power hunting recoil was making them flinch. Loading up a batch with Trail Boss dropped the muzzle flip down to nothing while maintaining excellent short-range target accuracy. It built their confidence up perfectly.

If you are just getting started with a basic single-stage press, this is the safest powder to learn on. It’s incredibly forgiving, impossible to accidentally over-fill, burns cleanly, and keeps your initial handloads incredibly fun and soft-shooting.

Because of the incredibly fluffy, donut-shaped kernels, this powder takes up massive volume. It is physically impossible to double-charge a .38 Special or .45 Colt casing because the extra powder would instantly spill over the top. It gives absolute peace of mind on a progressive press.
Waylon Cooper –
I’ve loaded thousands of rounds for SASS using this blend. It flows smoothly through my Dillon 550B powder measure with zero bridging. Velocity numbers match up consistently, and it knocks down steel targets cleanly without wearing out my barrels.
Willie Richardson –
A lot of reduced-recoil loads suffer from erratic ignition or hang-fires if you don’t use high-energy magnum primers. Trail Boss ignites instantly and uniformly using regular, standard primers. The standard deviation numbers across my chronograph are incredibly tight and consistent.

Because this blend burns at a noticeably cooler thermal threshold than high-velocity rifle powders, it doesn’t cause any throat erosion or barrel wear. Spent cases come out completely clean, and a single pass with a basic bore snake removes what little carbon is left.

Max-power loads out of a snub-nosed S&W 629 are a punishing test of will. Swapping to Trail Boss allowed me to compile some sensible, sub-900 FPS practice rounds with cast lead swaged bullets. It is exceptionally accurate and pleasant to shoot all day long.
Brinkley –
Trail Boss is the only powder I trust for loading ‘softball’ pressure rounds in my early smokeless battle rifles like the Gewehr 88 and .303 British. It safely fills the massive vintage brass cases to ensure a consistent, low-pressure burn without straining old steel.

Despite the unique donut shape of the kernels, it flows surprisingly well through my automated powder drops. It doesn’t bind up the drum or shear the flakes like long extruded sticks do. Every dropped charge throws within a tenth of a grain variation across hundred-round runs.
Jack Mitchell –
I use it exclusively to fire-form wildcat cartridges like .303 Epps or modified Mauser casings. It delivers just enough uniform chamber expansion to blow the shoulder geometry out perfectly flat against the walls without subjecting the throat to high thermal wear.
Bob Myers –
I teach basic handloading at my local club, and this is the only powder I let beginners drop on their first day. The extreme volume makes visual verification foolproof—anyone can look down into a tray of 50 cases and instantly spot an error before seating a bullet.
Benjamin Wood –
I have a spinal fusion in my neck from a service injury and thought my big-bore shooting days were over. Loading my .500 Linebaugh and 7mm Rem Mag with Trail Boss dropped the concussive recoil down to completely manageable levels. It keeps me on the range without the pain.
Ozark Gary –
Don’t let the 9-ounce bottle size fool you—because this composition is so incredibly light and high-volume, it fills the jug right to the absolute brim. Your individual grain charges per cartridge are tiny, so a single can yields an immense number of finished rounds.

If you want to pull the crack out of your centerfire rifles, this is the cheat code. It consistently pushes a 150gr lead bullet at roughly 1,400 FPS out of my bolt gun. It sounds like a mild .22 Magnum through a suppressor and cycles incredibly clean.

Whether you are a seasoned competitor competing in Cowboy Action events or a hobbyist just trying to make big-bore rifles cheap and comfortable to shoot on the weekends, this powder is a mandatory staple. It does exactly what it is advertised to do, safely and flawlessly.
